Through his artistic vision and skillful hands, Rupan Matharu has carved quite a name for himself in the world of art. Hailing from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, Rupan Matharu carries a legacy of craftsmanship that spans generations.

A maestro of the delicate art of plastic inlay on wood, he stands to be a stalwart among contemporary artists. Rupan Matharu comes from a lineage of revered artisans and art critics and has diligently followed the footsteps of his forefathers with the same dedication and gusto as those before him.

Matharu is a recipient of the prestigious Shilp Guru Award in 2016. He also won the State Award in 1989 from the Government of Punjab and also a National Merit certificate from the Development Commissioner (Handicraft) Government of India in 1994. He has also won the National Award for his contribution to the world of art in 1997 which was presented to him by the esteemed Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He has trained over 180 artisans in wood inlay craftsmanship and works tirelessly to create awareness among students and the general public about Punjab’s rich tradition of wood inlays.

With his decades of experience, Matharu has mastered ways to infuse new designs into the craft while modernizing the technique to keep up with the changing times. He stands as a true example of the fact that if you put enough of your heart and soul into a skill, it turns into something magical.
