TANJORE PAINTING

ABOUT THE CRAFT

Tanjore painting, originating from Tanjore (Thanjavur) in South India, is celebrated for its vivid colors, intricate details, and lavish use of gold foil. This traditional art form, dating back to the 16th century, predominantly features Hindu gods, goddesses, and mythological scenes depicted in a stylized and iconic manner.

The process begins with preparing a wooden board layered with cloth and a mixture of limestone and glue to create a smooth surface. Artisans then outline and fill the main figures with vibrant mineral and vegetable-derived colors. The application of gold foil adds a luxurious touch, highlighting jewelry, crowns, and backgrounds to create a divine aura.

Tanjore paintings hold profound cultural and religious significance, adorning temples, palaces, and homes as revered icons. Beyond their spiritual role, these artworks exemplify the skill and devotion of the artisans, blending traditional techniques with contemporary themes to maintain their timeless appeal in the realm of Indian artistic heritage.
