SOZNI EMBROIDERY

ABOUT THE CRAFT

Sozni embroidery, originating in Kashmir, features intricate designs stitched with hand-dyed silk threads on fabrics like wool or pashmina. Artisans achieve remarkable detail with up to 700 stitches per square centimeter, reflecting centuries-old traditions and cultural significance.

This craft begins with transferring designs onto carved wooden blocks for imprinting patterns onto the fabric, followed by meticulous embroidery on both sides. Each artisan brings a unique touch to their work, emphasizing individual styles and techniques passed down through generations.

Sozni embroidery is also seen in Central Asian garments, but the artisans of Kashmir have been practising this craft for generations which go back 400 years. This art form continues to evolve, blending traditional techniques with contemporary interpretations, and remains a hallmark of Kashmir’s rich artistic legacy.
