MITHILA PAINTING

ABOUT THE CRAFT

Mithila painting, or Madhubani art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India. Known for intricate patterns and vibrant colors, it depicts scenes from Hindu mythology, nature, and daily life. Artists use natural dyes and apply them with fingers, twigs, brushes, and matchsticks on handmade paper, cloth, or walls.

The creation process involves detailed line work and geometric patterns filled with bright colors like red, green, blue, and yellow. Themes include gods, goddesses, flora, fauna, and cultural symbols, reflecting community beliefs and traditions. Each painting uniquely expresses the artist’s creativity, passed down through generations.

Mithila paintings are significant for rituals, festivals, and special occasions. They have gained international recognition for their beauty and intricacy. This art form helps preserve and celebrate Indian folk art traditions.
