KALAMKARI

ABOUT THE CRAFT

Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, features intricate hand-painted designs on cotton fabric using natural vegetable dyes. The process involves treating the fabric with Myrobalan bud, flower pastes, and buffalo milk before applying colors from iron fillings, jaggery, leaves, and flowers.

Derived from the Persian words “kalam” (pen) and “kari” (craftsmanship), this art form uses a bamboo or tamarind pen to create detailed black outlines filled with vibrant hues. It depicts mythological themes, Hindu gods, and scenes from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Known for its rich detail and earthy color palette, Kalamkari combines skillful drawing and meticulous dyeing. Each piece showcases the dedication to preserving this traditional Indian artistry.
