BLUE POTTERY

ABOUT THE CRAFT

Blue pottery is a traditional craft, originating from Persia and introduced to India during the Mughal era, renowned for its distinctive cobalt blue and white designs. This vibrant craft has found a prominent home in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where skilled artisans continue to produce and innovate these exquisite pieces.

The creation process involves a unique dough made from quartz powder, powdered glass, Multani mitti (Fuller’s earth), gum, and water, fired at low temperatures. This method results in delicate yet stunning items ranging from decorative tiles and vases to functional bowls and plates, showcasing the artisans’ expertise.

Artisans meticulously paint floral and geometric patterns, often incorporating motifs like peacocks and flowers, reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage. Blue pottery not only preserves traditional artistry but also supports local livelihoods, with efforts to promote it through exhibitions and workshops ensuring its continued relevance and appreciation.
