BONE INLAY

ABOUT THE CRAFT

Bone inlay is an intricate and delicate art form originating from the royal courts of Rajasthan, India. This traditional technique involves embedding pieces of bone into wooden surfaces to create elaborate designs, requiring immense precision and patience. The process includes carefully shaping natural buffalo bone with specialized tools and inlaying it into the wood to form intricate patterns.

Craftsmen must handle the bone meticulously to avoid breakage, as the thin slivers are brittle and challenging to work with. Despite the fragility, the intricate designs achieved through bone inlay showcase the artisan’s skill and creativity, often evolving spontaneously as the work progresses. The finished pieces are not only beautiful but also reflect a high level of craftsmanship and artistic expression.

In the past, ivory and camel bone were used, but due to bans, only buffalo bone is currently utilized, with some artisans also using acrylic. The true value of bone inlay craft lies in the intricacy of the designs and the mastery of the delicate process, making each piece a unique and cherished work of art.
