Inlay Artistry Chest

Artisan – Rupan Matharu
Craft – Acrylic Inlay on Wood

The Shilp Guru award-winning chest, crafted by Rupan Matharu from Indian rosewood, fuses traditional Hoshiarpur inlay and scratch-work.

Inspired by Mughal floral and geometric motifs, it uses acrylic instead of ivory or bone, reflecting modern environmental standards. Matharu revitalizes scratch-work by integrating it with inlay techniques, creating a striking contrast. Etched designs in acrylic placed on ebony wood are filled with a blend of boot polish, ink, and turpentine, leaving intricately designed grooves. Skillful bending of acrylic over the skirting continues on the lid, enhancing the elaborate detailing.

After five years of research and four years of craftsmanship, the chest by Rupan Matharu showcases exceptional artistry and preserves a traditional art form.
